Frequently Asked Questions
Take a look at our FAQ’s for further answers to questions about our retreats, services and approach.
What is included in the price?
Two weeks of university-level tuition designed and delivered by research-active subject experts who currently teach in leading UK universities. The programme is designed by our founder and director who has decades of experience as a teacher and educational leader. All texts are included. Class sizes are capped at a level that balances classroom dynamics with the ability to tailor the retreat to the needs of students and parents. Each retreat is based in the beautiful 100-acre grounds of Blundell’s School in Devon.
Who are these retreats for?
Anyone aged 16-19 years old who is interested in deepening their understanding of the big ideas that have shaped society, art and politics. They represent an ideal opportunity to experience university-style learning before getting to university. The texts and ideas that will be covered are foundational for many humanities subjects at undergraduate level. These retreats offer students a chance to familiarise themselves with these ideas before they get to university.
How qualified are the tutors on the retreats?
All of our tutors are current teachers at leading UK universities and are subject experts. They all have Masters qualifications as a minimum prerequisite and must have or be working towards a PhD in the subject they are teaching. All tutors are DBS checked. The academic content of each retreat is designed collaboratively by our tutors with support from our founder and director, who has several decades of educational leadership and pedagogical experience, as well as being a current university teacher and researcher.
What happens on the first day?
On day one, you will be welcomed by your tutor and the director. You will receive your Logos Institute lanyard that will need to be worn at all times, both on and off site, during the retreat. You will also receive a branded tote bag filled with all the texts you will be studying, as well as some other key information that you might need to refer to. Your tote bag will also include a journal for reflective writing or to take notes. After you have been checked in and received your tote bags, the director and/or your tutor will give you a thorough orientation of the site and any health and safety information that you might need to know. There will be plenty of time for questions. Then, we will dive straight into some big ideas.
Can I have a discount?
Short answer: yes! The first ten places on each of our retreats have been reduced by £200 to just £999. After the first ten places on each retreat are gone, the price of each will go up to the original price of £1199. If you wish to secure an even bigger discount, you can book both retreats in combination and receive an additional £400 off the price of the two retreats. This brings the total price of both retreats to just £1598 versus £2398 – a saving of £800!
How do I get there?
Blundell’s School is close to the M5 and has ample parking on site and nearby. Tiverton Parkway station is a short drive away, and is also accessible by regular bus services or by car or taxi. There are many hotels and B&Bs within a short walk, drive, train, or bus journey of the school. For a more tailored solution to your transport or accommodation needs, please contact us at info@logosbooks.co.uk
Can I get a refund?
Because many of the costs associated with running these retreats are incurred well in advance of the summer, we cannot offer refunds except where the retreats are cancelled by us for unforeseen circumstances. Please see the ‘Terms and Conditions’ page on this site for more information, or email us at info@logosbooks.co.uk.
I am still unsure, who can I contact?
Investing in your children’s education is a big decision and we don’t want you to rush. If you still have unanswered questions, you can either email info@logosbooks.co.uk for more general information, or feel free to email our director at adam@logosbooks.co.uk. Adam can answer any questions you might have, or arrange a phone call if this is preferable.
What does an average day look like?
Students can arrive on site from 8am and seminars will begin at 9am. The first few hours of each day might involve the introduction of any new ideas or texts to be covered that day, plus some reflection on previous learning. The middle part of each day will be dedicated to independent study and readings, which can be carried out in the beautiful grounds of Blundell’s School, in breakout spaces, or over lunch in cafes in town – just a short walk away. Seminars will resume in the early afternoon and will include small group discussion, independent reading or reflective writing, and debate. Several days across the two weeks of each seminar will see talks delivered by expert guest speakers. The end of each retreat will feature a public, student-led debate, dependent on student preference and numbers.
Are these retreats worth the money?
Both of our retreats are priced to represent a significant saving over and above the average weekly cost of attendance at a good independent school in the UK. We only employ current UK university teachers who are subject experts and provide all the learning materials students need to attend and engage with our retreats. Our guest speakers are world-leading academics and thought leaders in their fields. Our venue is a world-class independent school set in beautiful 100-acre grounds in mid-Devon. Each of our retreats has strict limits on class size, and the structure of each is designed to allow our tutors to be responsive to student needs and interests. In comparison to other pre-university summer schools in the UK, our retreats are priced incredibly competitively.
