The texts and ideas that have survived to us from the ‘classical world’ of ancient Greece and Rome continue to permeate modern culture. Both Greek and Latin have left their marks in the languages we speak too: whenever we mention academia, anarchy or autobiographies, the ancient Greeks are with us. If we are asking where we can find literature on liberty at the library, the Latin-speaking Romans are our companions. In art, literature, politics, philosophy – the list goes on – echoes of the classical world abound.
Why should this be the case? What is it about these time periods and places that causes us to turn our attention towards the ideas that emanate from them?

Our Classical Thought retreat is for anyone interested in learning about some of the texts and ideas that have been thought of as forming the foundations of so-called ‘Western’ culture over the past few thousand years. We will cover well known texts by poets, writers and thinkers such as Homer, Sappho, Sophocles, Plato, Cicero and Ovid. But we will also cover some that you might not have heard of: the pre-Socratic philosophers perhaps, or lesser known poets and playwrights. Our expert tutors will tailor their seminars and the course of the entire retreat to the needs and interests of our students.
We will be approaching the texts and ideas from this period critically. We will ask ourselves how and why the modern receptions and ‘after lives’ of these texts continue to influence society today.
